The Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), Sarah Bireete, and the Executive Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika, Eunice Musiime, were reportedly picked up by armed men on Sunday afternoon and taken to an unknown location.
According to reports, military personnel surrounded Musiime’s home on Sunday morning. Upon learning of the situation, Bireete went to check on her colleague, but both women were reportedly taken away by the armed personnel.
The reasons for their reported arrest remain unclear. However, the incident comes amid an ongoing search for political analyst Miria Matembe, who is reportedly in hiding after the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, declared her wanted.
On Thursday, soldiers reportedly raided Akina Mama wa Afrika’s offices while searching for Matembe.
The reported arrests were confirmed by National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who described the current situation in Uganda as worrying.
“Two leading civil society leaders and distinguished lawyers, Dr. Sarah Bireete, Executive Director of CCG, and Eunice Musiime, Executive Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika, are the latest victims of the ongoing criminality. They have been abducted by the military and driven off to an unknown destination,” Kyagulanyi posted on X.
Bireete was previously arrested on December 30, 2025, and charged with unlawful handling of voters’ data. She was later released on a cash bail of Shs1 million.
