The Electoral Commission has set June 10, 2026, as the date for the by-election to elect a new Kikuube District Chairperson, following the death of the incumbent, Peter Banura, who died in a road accident on April 4, 2026, in Kiziranfumbi, Kikuube District.
In a statement issued by the Electoral Commission and signed by its Chairperson, Simon Byabakama, the Commission confirmed that a stakeholders’ meeting will be held on April 27, 2026, followed by a media briefing to provide further details on the electoral roadmap.
The process will begin with the update of the National Voters Register at parish level from April 28 to 30, 2026. April 30 will also serve as the cut-off date for voter registration and transfer of voting locations within Kikuube District.
Between April 27 and 29, the Commission will recruit officials to display the voters register. The list of recruited officials will be displayed from April 30 to May 5 at the office of the District Returning Officer and sub-county headquarters.
On May 7, the Commission will train display officers, supervisors, and officials handling voter location slips, and issue appointment letters.
The voters register will be displayed at polling stations from May 8 to 12, 2026. This will be followed by the display of Parish Tribunal recommendations for inclusion or deletion from the register from May 13 to 15 at parish headquarters.
Candidate nomination will take place on May 25 and 26, followed by inspection of nomination papers and handling of complaints from May 26 to June 1. On May 27, the Returning Officer will meet candidates to harmonize campaign programmes and establish liaison committees.
Campaigns will run from May 28 to June 8, 2026. During the same period, the Commission will recruit polling day officials and process accreditation for political parties, organisations, and election observers.
From June 1 to June 8, the names of polling day officials will be displayed for public inspection. Voter location slips will be issued between June 1 and June 10.
Training of polling officials, tally clerks, and party agents, as well as issuance of appointment letters, will be conducted on June 4 and 5. Officials will also be trained on the use of biometric voter verification kits ahead of polling day.
Kikuube District will go to the polls on June 10, 2026, with results expected to be declared the same day.
