Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been appointed as the National Executive Chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), signaling a new chapter for the recently registered political movement. Lukwago will lead the party for a two-year term.
The announcement was made during PFF’s first National Delegates’ Convention, held on Tuesday, July 8, at the party’s headquarters on Katonga Road in Kampala.
The high-profile event attracted over 600 delegates from across Uganda and marked the formal unveiling of the party’s registration certificate and political symbols, following its official registration on June 5.
Lukwago, speaking after his election, expressed readiness to steer the party towards what he described as “democratic transformation” for Uganda.
It was during this event that it was confirmed that Dr. Kizza Besigye a key founding figure in the partywill not contest any elective position, as he continues to serve as the Chair of the Council of Eminent Persons, PFF’s highest advisory body.
The Council also includes Garuga Musinguzi, Chapaa Karuhanga, and Wafula Oguttu.
Lukwago will be deputized by an experienced and regionally diverse leadership team; Dr. Lulume Bayiga (Buikwe South MP), now Deputy Chairperson, who recently defected from the Democratic Party,Betty Aol Ochan, Gulu City Woman MP and former Leader of the Opposition, appointed to oversee Northern Uganda, MP Nicholas Kamara, in charge of Western Uganda and Oduman Okello, representing Eastern Uganda.
In another key appointment, Kiira Municipality MP Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda was named the party’s Secretary General, placing him at the center of PFF’s organizational and political strategy.
The National Convention was also notable for drawing participation from a wide range of political actors, including representatives from other parties highlighting what some analysts see as an effort to build a broad-based opposition platform ahead of Uganda’s next electoral cycle.
The nation now awaits to see whom the newly formed party will front as its presidential candidate. While many speculate that Erias Lukwago may take on the mantle, he has not yet made any official declaration.
