Four suspected cattle raiders have been killed during a major Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) operation that led to the recovery of more than 30 herds of stolen cattle in parts of East Acholi.
The operation, conducted by the UPDF 5 Infantry Division under the security campaign Dumisha Usalama, took place between February 2 and February 4, 2026, covering Lokokwai in Kitgum District, Amita Village in Abim District, and Loborom Village in Agago District.
During the operation, UPDF troops engaged armed Karamojong warriors who had reportedly been involved in cattle thefts and attacks on communities in the region. Four of the raiders were neutralised as soldiers moved to recover stolen animals.
In addition to the livestock, troops recovered an AK-47 rifle with three rounds of ammunition, as well as bows and arrows and three mobile phones believed to belong to the suspects.
The Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, Major General Keith Katungyi, said the operation was aimed at restoring security and protecting communities that have long suffered from cattle rustling.
He assured residents that the army would maintain its presence in the area to prevent further raids and ensure that all livestock in the affected communities remains safe.
The UPDF said the successful recovery of the animals has helped return stolen livelihoods to their owners and sent a strong warning to armed cattle raiders operating in the region.
Security operations in East Acholi are continuing as the army works to maintain peace and stability.
