Former Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Katumba Wamala is among the 1863 soldiers set to retire from active services of the Ugandan army, UPDF.
The list which also has 20 other generals under batch 6 of the UPDF retirement process is set to be relieved of active duty in the Ugandan army later this year, starting next month.
Born on November 19, 1956, in Kalangala District, Gen. Katumba joined the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) before crossing to the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1986. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become one of the most influential figures in Uganda’s security establishment.
Katumba served as Inspector General of Police from 2001 to 2005 before being appointed Commander of Land Forces, a position he held until 2013. He later served as Chief of Defence Forces until 2017. He currently serves as Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport.
Others set for retirement include the commander of the UPDF reserve force, Lt Gen Charles Otema, former deputy CDF, Lt Gen Charles Angina and former deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Tumusiime Katsigazi as well as the former CMI boss, Maj Gen Abel Kandiho.
The list also has Maj Gen Apollo Kasiita Gowa, the director of citizenship and immigration control at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, former Joint Chief of Staff Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda and Brig Charles Asiimwe Kahangire, former CMI deputy chief, who is also commonly known as CK Asiimwe.
Others are Brigadier Fred Rugadya Akiiki, Brigadier Patrick Mwesigye, Brigadier Simon Nicholas Ocan, and Brigadier Winston Byaruhanga.
