KAMPALA, Uganda — Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, has directed the Inspector General of Police to investigate allegations of illegal eviction and malicious damage to property at Kibuga Block 4 Plot 152 and Block 12 Plots 665, 658, and 659.
The investigation follows a complaint filed by MBS Advocates on behalf of the Kisenyi Community Mosque, which was demolished on December 12, 2024.
According to the complaint, the mosque’s Imam, Jaloud Abdulsalaam Miiro, was injured during an altercation with a group of thugs allegedly hired by businessman John Bosco Muwonge.
The mosque’s leadership accuses Muwonge of unlawfully evicting them from the land and assaulting them in the process. They also accuse the police of standing by as the demolition took place.
The demolition was carried out despite instructions from the Resident City Commissioner, Jane Asiimwe Muhindo, to the DPC of Old Kampala, Francis Liiga, to refrain from carrying out any eviction or demolition orders and to protect the mosque from damage.
Liiga has been accused of defying these orders and supervising the demolition, which occurred at midnight without the presence of all involved parties.
The Imam has sought intervention from the Office of the Director of Crime Intelligence, urging an investigation into Liiga’s role in the demolition and alleged collaboration with the thugs.
The Inspector General of Police has been directed to investigate the allegations and take appropriate action.
