Two of Europe’s football giants, Germany and Netherlands, have been knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after dramatic Round of 32 defeats in penalty shootouts.
Germany suffered a heartbreaking exit against Paraguay following a 1-1 draw after normal and extra time.
Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute through Julio Enciso and went into the break ahead. Germany responded in the 54th minute when Kai Havertz equalized, sending the match into extra time after neither side could find a winner.
The game was eventually decided on penalties, with Paraguay prevailing 4-3. Germany missed three spot-kicks, as Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah all failed to convert. Paraguay held their nerve to secure a place in the Round of 16.
In another thrilling encounter, Morocco stunned the Netherlands by winning 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The Netherlands looked set for victory after Cody Gakpo scored in the 72nd minute. However, Morocco struck deep into stoppage time to level the score and force extra time. With neither side able to find a winner, the match went to penalties, where Morocco held their composure to seal a famous victory and book their place in the Round of 16.
Earlier on Monday, Brazil survived a scare from Japan to secure a 2-1 victory. Gabriel Martinelli scored a stoppage-time winner to send the five-time world champions into the next round.
Germany’s elimination marks the end of their first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage appearance since winning the tournament in 2014.
