The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) officially began on Sunday in Morocco, bringing a festive atmosphere, vibrant celebrations, and a winning start for the host nation.
The opening ceremony highlighted African culture and unity, with fans from across the continent filling stadiums and fan parks. Security was tight as anticipation reached a fever pitch for the month-long tournament.
Hosts Morocco opened the competition with a commanding 2–0 victory over Comoros, sending a strong message to their group rivals and continuing the tradition of host nations performing well in their opening matches.
Meanwhile, attention in Uganda is shifting to the Uganda Cranes, who are set to begin their AFCON campaign on Tuesday. The team will face Nigeria in their opening match, followed by games against Tunisia and regional rivals Tanzania.
The encounter with Nigeria is expected to be challenging, but fans are optimistic that the Cranes can start their tournament positively. AFCON 2025 offers Uganda another opportunity to compete with Africa’s elite teams and elevate the nation’s football profile on the continental stage.
