The Ministry of Internal Affairs has said the number of victims who have so far reported to have been scammed by city socialite Christian Asiimwe, widely known as Don Chris has reached 350.
Last week, police said Asiimwe, who owns Skypins Tours and Travel Company had defrauded over 100 Ugandans under the guise of offering foreign employment.
However, updating the country on the matter, the Minister of Internal Affairs spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi said so far 350 Ugandans have reported to have been defrauded by the socialite in the job scam.
“Assimwe orchestrated a large-scale scam targeting Ugandans looking for jobs in the US, Canada and other countries. He had promised them high paying jobs abroad. The number of Ugandans that has raised complaints has now reached 350 and the total amount involved is now averaging shs1.5 billion,” Mundeyi said.
When reports of this high-level scamming started swirling, the socialite took to social media platforms including Facebook and Tik Tok to abuse his victims.
Speaking on Monday, the Internal Affairs spokesperson confirmed the suspect left the country on June, 20.
“He left the country through the Malaba border,” Mundeyi said.
By using the Malaba border, the socialite tried to avoid detection by security and immigration, had he opted to use Entebbe International Airport.
“My appeal to Don Chris, wherever he may be is that we have listened to only the side of Ugandans who are complaining. He could have his own side of the story and could be right. Some of these victims could be telling lies but we ask him to come out from where he is hiding, avail himself to authorities and explain himself,”Mundeyi said.
“Come out and explain yourself to have this matter solved by sitting on a round table with your accusers.”
