Buganda Kingdom is today celebrating the 71st birthday of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
Born on April 13, 1955, at Mulago National Referral Hospital, the Kabaka is the son of the late Edward Muteesa II and Namasole Sarah Nalule, a daughter of Kisosonkole.
At the time of his birth, his father was in exile following the abolition of kingdoms by then President Milton Obote.
This year’s main celebrations are being held at St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, where prayers and thanksgiving are taking place.
The function is being led by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, accompanied by the Nabagereka, Sylvia Nagginda.
In line with tradition, the Kabaka dedicated his birthday to a health cause, a campaign that has over the years been championed through the annual Kabaka Birthday Run.
The 2026 edition, held on Sunday, attracted more than 130,000 participants in a show of solidarity towards the fight against HIV/AIDs.
The Kingdom continues to mark the Kabaka’s birthday through interfaith prayers, with different religious institutions taking turns to host the celebrations.
Last year’s event was held at Lubaga Cathedral, while this year the Orthodox Church is leading the thanksgiving prayers.
The celebrations highlight not only the Kabaka’s life and legacy but also his continued commitment to promoting health and unity among his subjects.
