Government has announced the availability of more than 2,300 free market spaces across various markets in the city to accommodate vendors currently operating on the streets.
In a statement issued on Friday, KCCA issued a seven-day ultimatum to all vendors operating on roads, walkways, and other non-gazetted spaces to vacate and relocate to designated markets.
To support the transition, the government has made available over 2,300 free trading spaces across KCCA-managed markets.
The free spaces are available in several major markets, including Nakawa, Luzira, Ntinda, Usafi, City Abattoir, Kamwokya, and Busega.
Vendors are encouraged to register for these spaces through the KCCA Market Allocation Committees and market administrators.
In total, 2,320 spaces have been allocated with 1,000 available at Usafi Market, 500 at Busega Market, 250 each at Kamwokya and City Abattoir, 120 at Luzira, and 100 each at Nakawa and Ntinda new markets.
KCCA urged street vendors to take advantage of the opportunity and relocate to the designated markets.
“We urge vendors who are currently operating along the streets to contact the market administrators to be supported in obtaining workspaces in KCCA markets,” the statement reads.
The Authority emphasized that all spaces are completely free of charge, with no hidden fees or payments required.
“Please note that these spaces are free of charge. You are only required to provide an LC1 letter and a copy of your National ID,” KCCA clarified.
Each market has a designated administrator whose contact information has been provided to help vendors secure the spaces quickly.
The Authority also warned individuals operating charcoal stoves (sigiri) or other fire-generating equipment in taxi parks and along streets to stop immediately, citing fire risks that threaten lives and property.
Full enforcement of the new trade order is set to begin on Friday, 31st October 2025, targeting key areas in the Central Business District including Ben Kiwanuka Street, Luwuum Street, Namirembe Road, Nakivubo Road, Allen Road, and Kikuubo Lane
