Veteran musician and pioneer of Uganda’s ragga scene, Dan Kazibwe popularly known as Ragga Dee—is taking fellow artist Mikie Wine real name Michael Mukwaya to court in a shs300 million copyright battle over a trending song.
In a formal Notice of Intention to Sue for Copyright Infringement dated July 16, 2025,
In a notice of intention to sue, Ragga Dee’s lawyers, MDG Law Advocates, accuse Mikie Wine of illegally reproducing his 2004 hit Nkuguddemu Oyagala Cash under the new title Zuena, which has recently gone viral on social media and YouTube.
They says the act is an infringement on a copyrighted song.
“Our client has exclusively performed this song for twenty one (21) years,” the notice reads in part. “You recently reproduced the same song, save for just adding ‘Zuena’, but the lyrics and the message is the same as our client’s song,” the laywers said in their intention to sue.
While Mikie Wine claimed in a recent TV interview that he had received Ragga Dee’s blessing to remake the song, the legal team fired back, categorically denying that any permission was ever given.
“You never sought our client’s permission before you remixed, reproduced and performed the song,” the notice states, laying the groundwork for what could become a landmark legal showdown in Uganda’s music industry.
Ragga Dee’s lawyers argue that Mikie Wine’s remake is not only unauthorized, but also a violation of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act (Cap 222) of Uganda’s laws.
They demand that Mikie Wine immediately stops distributing the song and compensate Ragga Dee with shs300 million within seven days.
Failure to meet the demands, the notice warns, will lead to a full-scale copyright lawsuit in court, seeking not only the initial sum but additional damages for “embarrassment, chagrin, and legal costs.”
