The minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr.Chris Baryomunsi has warned Ugandans against the growing trend of celebrating the deaths of others, describing the practice as immoral and contrary to the country’s values.
Baryomunsi, made the remarks on Wednesday while responding to reactions on social media following the death of Maj Gen Deus Sande, who passed away on Wednesday morning. Some users posted jokes and celebratory messages in response to his death.
“We have lost two army generals, Maj Gen Francis Takirwa and Maj Gen Deus Sande, but there are some Ugandans celebrating their deaths. That behaviour does not reflect our values as Ugandans. You cannot celebrate someone’s death,” Baryomunsi said.
The minister also defended the visibility of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers in public places, saying their presence should not cause concern.
“Our soldiers are professional and well-mannered. They live among us just like priests and other community members. There is nothing unusual about seeing them in public,” he said.
On the political front, Baryomunsi dismissed criticism of opposition leaders who meet President Yoweri Museveni, arguing that such engagements should not be viewed as betrayal.
“There is nothing wrong with opposition leaders meeting the President. Dialogue is healthy for the country. The politics of condemning anyone who speaks with the NRM is misguided,” he said.
He further revealed that the Electoral Commission is expected to soon announce the roadmap for the election of Local Council leaders, including village chairpersons.
Baryomunsi also brushed aside concerns about funding for the elections, assuring the public that the government is fully prepared.
“We have the resources to conduct these elections. There is no cause for alarm,” he added.
