The troubles for outgoing speaker of parliament, Anita Among seem to be far from over as security on Sunday raided her other home in Kigo, Wakiso district.
The heavily guarded security operation led by Criminal Investigations Directorate detectives which first laid siege at the Nakasero home in Kampala extended its tentacles to Among’s home in Kigo searching it in what seems to be a widening crackdown by the state.
The crackdown by teams from police and the military is also said to be extended to Among’s country home in Bukedea district.
It is also reported that the crackdown has also extend to her home in Ntinda as the state seeks to curtail alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.
Reports also indicate that several of Among’s close allies are also in line to have their homes raided by security as the crackdown widens.
The developments follow a reported closed-door meeting held at State House Nakasero earlier this week, where President Yoweri Museveni is alleged to have questioned Among over the source of her wealth and recent extravagant spending.
The controversy intensified after reports emerged that Among had acquired a luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan reportedly worth about Shs3.4 billion, triggering widespread debate on social media, with many Ugandans questioning the source of the funds used to purchase the vehicle.
The matter gained further public attention after the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, posted comments on X questioning the lavish lifestyle associated with the Speaker.
In one of the posts, Gen. Muhoozi remarked that despite being the President’s son, he had never owned or even ridden in a Rolls-Royce, adding that President Museveni himself had never used such a vehicle.
Days later, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a pressure group associated with Gen. Muhoozi, withdrew its earlier endorsement of Among and her deputy for the next parliamentary leadership, saying it would instead support whoever President Museveni endorses.
The political tension escalated further on Thursday night after Gen. Muhoozi publicly endorsed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for Speaker of Parliament, a move that sparked intense reactions online and renewed scrutiny over Among’s leadership and wealth.
