Morocco are through to the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 final after eliminating defending champions Senegal 4-3 on penalties in a tense semifinal clash at the Mandela National Stadium on Tuesday night.
The two sides were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. Morocco, winners in 2018 and 2021, held their nerve to book their place in Saturday’s final.
The Atlas Lions will face tournament surprise package Madagascar in the final at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium, as they chase a record-extending third CHAN crown.
Senegal, who edged hosts Uganda 1-0 in the quarterfinals, were hoping to defend the title they won in 2022. But Morocco, who had missed the last edition, showed resilience after overcoming Tanzania in the last eight.
Saturday’s showdown will decide whether Morocco reclaims their dominance or Madagascar, making a fairytale run, can crown their campaign with a maiden continental title.
