President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Juma Witonze as the new State Minister for Internal Affairs, filling a vacancy created after Parliament rejected the appointment of Dr. Lawrence Muganga over concerns regarding his dual citizenship.
The appointment was announced on Monday.
Witonze currently serves as the Chief Coordinator of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in the Greater Mpigi region.
The appointment of Dr. Muganga, the Vice Chancellor of Victoria University was declined by Parliament’s Appointments Committee due to questions surrounding his citizenship status.
A report from the Ministry of Internal Affairs indicated that Muganga has Ugandan, Canadian and Rwandan citizenships.
Background
Born in Mirambi Village, Kifampa Sub-county, Gomba District, Witonze holds two master’s degrees—one in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies and another in Global Political Economy. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Community-Based Rehabilitation.
In addition to his public service role, Witonze is the Chief Executive Officer of Adrois Group, an investment advisory firm.
His appointment comes as President Museveni continues to fill vacancies in the Cabinet following the recent approval process by Parliament.
