The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), in partnership with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS), has collected 839 units of blood during a two-day nationwide donation drive aimed at supporting health facilities grappling with blood shortages.

The campaign, held from October 19 to 20, 2026, was conducted in Kampala, Gulu, Mbale and Mbarara, attracting ERA staff, stakeholders in the electricity supply industry and members of the public.

The initiative comes amid continued demand for blood to support emergency medical care, accident victims and patients requiring transfusions across the country.

According to Diana Naisuna Nambi, ERA’s Manager for Public Relations and Consumer Affairs, the blood donation drive forms part of the authority’s commitment to improving community welfare beyond its regulatory responsibilities.

“The partnership with UBTS for the blood donation drive was undertaken in line with the Authority’s Corporate Social Responsibility Policy that focuses on interventions in Health, Education, and the Environment,” Nambi said.

She said ERA recognises the importance of supporting initiatives that address pressing community needs, particularly those related to health and the preservation of human life.

“ERA is pleased to have contributed to this life-saving initiative that will impact hundreds of Ugandans with a new lease of life,” Nambi said.

Nambi also commended the individuals and organisations that participated in the campaign, describing blood donation as a noble act that can make a significant difference to patients in need of transfusions.

The collection of 839 units adds to ERA’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting sustainable development in different parts of the country.

Beyond health-related interventions, the authority has supported the protection of spring wells and tree-planting activities designed to restore water catchment areas around rivers hosting hydropower plants and projects in the Central, Western, West Nile and Northern regions.

These initiatives seek to promote environmental conservation and protect natural resources that support electricity generation and community livelihoods.

ERA also runs the annual Women in Energy project, through which women working in the energy sector engage and inspire young girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Since its launch in 2019, the initiative has reached more than 50,000 young women from 58 schools across Uganda through physical engagements and inspirational talks with women professionals in the energy industry, according to the authority.

Through its health, education and environmental programmes, ERA continues to use its corporate social responsibility initiatives to complement its regulatory mandate and contribute to national development.
