President Yoweri Museveni has thrown his weight behind Kenyan politician Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union (AU) chairmanship, praising Odinga’s deep commitment to Pan-Africanism.
Museveni made the endorsement during the official launch of Odinga’s candidacy at State House Nairobi on Tuesday.
“This is a job of vision, conviction, and knowledge. I will support Rt Hon Odinga because he is a convinced Pan-Africanist,” Museveni stated.
Museveni highlighted Odinga’s passion for African unity and development as key reasons for his support, contrasting Odinga with other candidates in the race who he believes are driven by personal career ambitions.
According to Museveni, Odinga is the right person to lead the continent toward economic integration and prosperity.
“This is not just a position; we are seeking a point man, someone to lead us in the greater battle for prosperity. Prosperity comes from African economic integration,” Museveni emphasized.
While acknowledging his disagreements with some members of Odinga’s political circle, such as Kenyan legislator Babu Owino, Museveni expressed confidence in Odinga’s nationalist values and his dedication to uniting Africa.
Museveni argued that these qualities make Odinga the ideal candidate to assume the role of AU chairman.
Raila Odinga, a veteran politician and former Prime Minister of Kenya, has long been a significant figure in African politics.
