President Museveni, also Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has presided over the retirement ceremony of seven senior army officers at State House, Entebbe, lauding their decades of service to the country.
The officers who officially retired are Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, Lt. Gen. Francis Ben Okello, Maj. Gen. Hudson Mukasa, Maj. Gen. George Igumba, Brig. Gen. John Byuma, Brig. Gen. Dominic B. Twesigomwe, and Brig. Gen. Augustine Kamyuka Kyazze.
Addressing the retirees, President Museveni thanked them for their contribution to Uganda’s stability and development, as well as honoring colleagues who lost their lives during the liberation struggle.
“We shall all die, but die after having done what? When I come here and see you people, I praise God that you and all of us—the population which supported us—took the right side of history. That is why Uganda is now where it is,” he said.
The president attributed the UPDF’s growth from a small liberation force into a modern, professional army to divine blessing and national unity. He revealed that improved economic performance has allowed government to enhance salaries and retirement benefits for soldiers.
“I don’t want my generals to retire in poverty. Since the economy has improved, it’s time to do something about the salaries and retirement benefits of the soldiers. Now this is the good money we are talking about,” Museveni said, urging the retirees to invest wisely and avoid risky ventures.
Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth praised the generals for serving with diligence and thanked their families for their support. Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Samuel Okiding commended President Museveni for his visionary leadership, the Defence Ministry for its support, and Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for steering the army’s transformation.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu expressed gratitude to God, President Museveni, and the UPDF leadership for the opportunity to serve the nation.
The ceremony was attended by senior Ministry of Defence officials, UPDF commanders, family members of the retirees, and invited guests. It marked the end of distinguished careers and the beginning of a new chapter for the officers who have played a role in shaping Uganda’s security landscape.
