The Electoral Commission (EC) will today, Tuesday, commence the nomination of presidential aspirants for the upcoming general elections, with three candidates scheduled to appear before the commission at the Lubowa nomination grounds.
Leading the day’s proceedings is incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, representing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). His nomination is set for 10:00 a.m.
At midday, the Conservative Party (CP) will present its flag bearer, Elton Joseph Mabirizi, followed by Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party (NPP), who will close the day’s activities with a 2:00 p.m. slot.
To qualify for nomination, all aspirants must meet constitutional and legal requirements, including being Ugandan citizens by birth, aged 18 or older, and registered voters. They are also required to present certified academic documents showing completion of at least the Advanced Level (A’Level) or its equivalent.
Other requirements include payment of a non-refundable nomination fee of Shs 20 million, submission of completed nomination forms, declaration of candidacy, three passport-sized photographs, and proof of voter registration for both the candidate and their nominators.
Each aspirant must also present a unique campaign symbol, appoint an official campaign agent, and secure endorsements from at least 100 registered voters from no fewer than 98 districts — representing two-thirds of all districts or cities in Uganda.
Upon successful nomination, candidates will receive official campaign vehicles, police escorts, and permission to briefly address their supporters before exiting the nomination grounds.
Access to the venue will be strictly regulated. Only accredited individuals will be allowed entry, with each aspirant limited to a delegation of no more than 20 persons. Names of delegates must be submitted to the EC in advance.
Transport to the venue is capped at two vehicles per candidate, each carrying a maximum of 10 occupants. All vehicles must bear official police-issued stickers.
The nomination exercise continues on Wednesday, September 24, with Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), expected to present their papers.
Nominations for other aspiring candidates remain pending as the EC continues to vet applications.
