Police have arrested 82 suspects in an intelligence-led operation targeting theft, burglary, drug-related offences and other criminal activities in Kampala.
The operation was conducted on September 14, 2026, in Mabitto, Nateete Central B, Nanfuka Zone, Kigwannya and Busega in Rubaga Division.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, several suspects were found in possession of suspected opium sticks at alleged points of sale, while others were found with suspected stolen mobile phones and other exhibits.
Kawala said the operation mainly targeted individuals suspected of stealing from travellers and motorists during periods of heavy traffic in Busega, Nateete and along the Northern Bypass, as well as those suspected of involvement in housebreaking and burglary.
“On 14 September 2026, the Police conducted an intelligence-led operation in Mabitto, within Nateete Central B; Nanfuka Zone; Kigwannya; and Busega in Rubaga Division, Kampala District,” Kawala said.
“The operation resulted in the arrest of 82 suspects, several of whom were found in possession of suspected opium sticks at alleged points of sale, while others were found in possession of suspected stolen mobile phones, among other exhibits,” she added.
During the screening and verification of the suspects, Police identified Juko Muhammad, commonly known as “Kampala”, whom they allege is a repeat offender involved in thefts from motor vehicles.
Kawala said Juko is particularly suspected of targeting Toyota Harrier grilles during periods of heavy traffic.
“His alleged criminal activities have been reported in several areas, including Kawempe, Bwaise, Nateete, Jinja Road and Kibuye Roundabout,” Kawala said.
Following the screening process, 68 of the 82 suspects remained in Police custody as investigations continued ahead of court proceedings.
Police said preliminary information indicates that some of the suspects are repeat offenders who had previously served custodial sentences for similar offences before allegedly returning to the community and resuming criminal activities.
Kawala said Police would continue carrying out intelligence-led and targeted operations against individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities.
“We will continue to conduct intelligence-led and targeted operations against individuals involved in theft, burglary, drug-related offences and other forms of criminality,” she said.
