Police have arrested two people in connection with the recent burglary at the Bank of Uganda headquarters in Kampala, where seven laptop computers were stolen earlier this week.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the arrests on Friday, saying investigations into the incident are ongoing.
“We wish to confirm the arrest of two suspects linked to the break-in at Bank of Uganda. Full details will follow shortly,” Rusoke said.
The break-in occurred at the central bank’s head offices on Kampala Road near City Square.
Authorities believe the suspects accessed the premises during the night before stealing several laptop computers from the institution.
In a statement issued after the incident, the central bank said the burglary had been detected at its headquarters at Plot 45 Kampala Road and confirmed that seven laptops were taken during the intrusion.
The institution said it had since partnered with security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the breach and identify those responsible.
Despite the incident, the Bank of Uganda assured the public that normal operations had not been interrupted.
“The BoU assures the public that its core operations and services remain fully functional and have not been disrupted by this incident,” the bank said in its statement.
Following the burglary, security agencies launched an extensive operation in parts of central Kampala as investigators pursued possible leads connected to the theft.
The operation saw security personnel cordon off several commercial buildings in the city centre including Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza and Kalungi Plaza where a search for the stolen laptops was conducted.
Several suspects were arrested but have since been released.
