Police in the Rwenzori West Region have arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of fresh coffee, after a police sniffer dog successfully tracked the culprit to his home in Kisomoro Sub-county, Bunyangabu District.
According to a police statement, the incident occurred after a farmer, identified as Fred Rugumayo, discovered a hole dug behind his coffee store and suspected that thieves had stolen his produce.
He immediately alerted police officers from Nyakigumba Police Station, who responded to the scene with the K9 Unit, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), and CID personnel.
Police confirmed the arrest, saying the canine team deployed a police sniffer dog named Darkis to follow the scent from the scene.
“The police sniffer dog led officers for about 600 meters to the home of a suspect identified as Lasson Bwambale, where the stolen coffee and a tapline were recovered,” statement reads.
Police added that the recovered items were identified by the complainant as his property.
“The suspect was immediately arrested, and the exhibits were secured as part of ongoing investigations,” SP Twesige noted.
The suspect remains in custody at Nyakigumba Police Station as investigations continue.
