Police have released the identities of the 14 people who died in Monday night’s devastating road crash at Lwera along the Kampala–Masaka Highway.
The fatal collision occurred at Kamunga Trading Centre in the Lwera Swamp and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 662AQ, and a Sinotruk tipper truck, registration number UBS 040F, which was transporting sand.
According to Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, all 14 people who died were occupants of the taxi.
“Fourteen people died on the spot, all of them occupants of the taxi. Four other victims—two from each vehicle—sustained injuries and were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment,” Kasirye said.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Alice Gracious Alobo, 30, a resident of Opit Town Council, Omoro District.
- Moses Kizza, 30, of Kyetume, Kyotera District.
- Joanita Natondwa, 23, of Masaka City.
- Aidah Namajja, 52, of Masaka City.
- Lawrence Ssebuuma, 34, of Mabaale-Kifuufu, Kyotera District.
- Margaret Nabbosa, 36, of Zirobwe Town Council, Luwero District.
- Veronica Nabbulime.
- Nabbulime’s juvenile daughter.
- Moses Kizza, 27.
- Innocent Irora, 39, an employee of Coca-Cola Namanve and a resident of Kyegegwa Town Council.
- Police Sergeant Nabukeya, whose duty station had not yet been established.
- Two unidentified adult males.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by the Sinotruk driver, who allegedly swerved into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the taxi.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash are ongoing.
