Police have carried out what they termed as an intelligence-led operation in which they recovered over 300 suspected stolen phones.
The operation according to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire followed reports of phone theft around the city and its environs.
“This was following intelligence indicating that the building had become a hub for individuals involved in the theft and sale of suspected stolen mobile phones. Many of those who lost phones reported that tracking them indicated they were last seen at Cooper Complex,” Owoyesigyire said.
He said 30 suspects were arrested and currently detained at the Central Police Station to assist with ongoing investigations.
“The recovered phones have been secured pending verification of ownership. Statements will be recorded from the suspects and other relevant witnesses, after which the suspects will be charged and prosecuted in accordance with the law where sufficient evidence exists.”
Police said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat the growing menace of mobile phone theft and the illicit trade in suspected stolen property.
Recently, the Police Crime Intelligence Directorate recovered over 140 smartphones from suspects who were planning to sell them to neighbouring countries including Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo after robbing them.
Police have urged members of the public to report stolen phones and use available tracking and identification tools to help recover lost devices and support investigations.
