Police at Old Kampala Division have recovered an AK-47 rifle hidden in luggage at Tausi Bus Terminal in Kampala Central Division.
The recovery followed a suspicious luggage incident involving a bus conductor and an unidentified passenger.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 14, 2026, at around 5:00am as passengers were boarding a bus bound for Mbarara.
Preliminary reports indicate that a man approached a bus conductor and requested him to load a piece of luggage onto the vehicle. As part of routine security checks, the conductor asked the passenger to open the bag for inspection. However, the man declined, raising suspicion.
The conductor proceeded to inspect the luggage and detected an object resembling a firearm, prompting him to alert authorities. A police task team responded promptly and conducted a thorough examination of the bag.
Police confirmed that an AK-47 rifle, with an empty magazine and no ammunition, had been concealed inside a white polythene bag and placed within another travel bag.
The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Police have since launched a manhunt as investigations into the incident continue.
SP Kawala commended the vigilance of the conductor, noting that his actions enabled the timely recovery of the weapon and may have averted a potential security threat.
