The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has remanded human rights activist Sarah Bireete to Luzira Prison over charges related to unlawful access and disclosure of personal data.

Bireete, 49, who was arrested earlier this week, was on Friday afternoon arraigned before court and charged with unlawfully obtaining or disclosing personal data, contrary to Section 35(1) and (2) of the Data Protection and Privacy Act.

According to the prosecution, between January and December 2025, at various locations across the country, Bireete unlawfully obtained or disclosed national voters’ information without the prior consent of the Electoral Commission.

She denied the charges and the state proscutor, Joan Keko told court that investigations into the matter are not yet complete.

Through her lawyers led by Jude Byamukama, Bireete applied for bail but the trial  Grade One Magistrate, Winnie Nankya adjourned the matter to January , 21 to allow the state respond to the application.

She consequently remanded Bireete to Luzira Prison until January 21, when she is expected to return to court for further proceedings.
