Seven people have died and two others sustained serious injuries following a road traffic accident in Sheema Municipality.
The crash occurred on Saturday,, at around 6:30 a.m. at Rushara in Kabwohe along the busy Mbarara–Bushenyi Highway.
According to police, the accident involved a black Toyota Fielder, registration number UA 702DL, which was travelling from Bushenyi towards Mbarara at the time of the incident.
The acting Greater Bushenyi Region Police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa said all seven occupants of the vehicle died on the spot while two survivors were rushed to ICOBI Hospital for treatment.
“Seven people lost their lives in the accident, and two survivors were rushed to ICOBI Hospital for medical attention,” SP Tayebwa said.
Preliminary information indicates that the victims were returning home from an overnight prayer service at St. Rose Catholic Church in areas including Rukinga, Kabingo, Kitooha, and Karushegu.
Police officers responded to the scene and have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash.
“Our traffic officers responded promptly and have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash,” SP Tayebwa added.
The bodies have been taken to Kabwohe Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examination.
