The Supreme Mufti of Kibuli, Sheikh Muhammad Shaban Galabuzi, has condemned the recent nighttime demolition of St. Balikudembe Market, widely known as Owino Market, calling the act inhumane and unfair to traders who depend on the market for their livelihoods.
Speaking during Eid al-Fitr prayers at Kibuli Mosque, Sheikh Galabuzi expressed deep concern over the manner in which the market was destroyed, emphasizing that traders should not be displaced without proper notice or planning.
“For those of us who have lived long, we know Owino as a market for the poor. To demolish it at night with a tractor is not humane,” he said, highlighting the vital role the market has played in supporting low-income families.
He urged authorities or any parties planning to repurpose the space to engage with traders, provide adequate notice, and make proper arrangements to safeguard their livelihoods.
Sheikh Galabuzi noted that Owino Market has long been a lifeline for families striving to improve their economic situation and should not be treated carelessly.
In his address, the Supreme Mufti also expressed concern over the fire that destroyed Katwe Market earlier this week, condemning such incidents as unjust and harmful to the community.
The Eid prayers at Kibuli Mosque drew several prominent figures, including Prince Kassim Nakibinge, the titular head of the Muslim faith in Uganda, outgoing Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and Hajji Twaha Kawaasi Kigongo, the First Deputy Katikkiro, who conveyed a message from Kabaka Mutebi.
