The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Richard Todwong, has said President Yoweri Museveni’s 71.65% victory in the 2026 general election reflects what the ruling party has historically been known for.
“This is the NRM as everyone knows it,” Todwong said. “Our percentage in this election has reset the party to the original movement. We are back to 70%, as many knew us, and we have won most constituencies.”
Todwong made the remarks during a function held to congratulate President Museveni upon his victory.
On Saturday, the Electoral Commission declared Museveni the winner of the presidential election after he secured 71.65% of the vote, translating to about 7.9 million votes. His main challenger, National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, came second with approximately 2 million votes, representing about 24% of the total votes cast.
Museveni last surpassed the 70% mark in 1996 when he won the election with 74% of the vote. In subsequent elections, he garnered 69% in 2001, 59% in 2006, 69% in 2011, 60% in 2016, and 58% in 2021.
Speaking on Sunday, Todwong said the ruling NRM party would continue winning decisively in parliamentary and future elections.
