Police have arrested two suspected “bijambiya” thugs accused of terrorizing residents of Kawempe and surrounding areas with violent robberies.
The suspects, identified as Najjib Serwanja and Derrick, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation conducted on April 21, 2026, along Tula Namere Road in Kawempe Division, Wakiso District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the operation followed numerous complaints from residents about panga-wielding criminals who had been attacking people in their homes.
“Following numerous complaints about panga-wielding thugs terrorizing residents in Kawempe and surrounding areas, an intelligence-led operation was launched on 21/04/2026 along Tula Namere Road in Kawempe Division, Wakiso District. The operation led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of several crucial exhibits,” SP Kawala said.
She added that preliminary investigations indicate the suspects were involved in breaking into people’s homes, brutally attacking victims with pangas before robbing them of their belongings.
During the operation, Police recovered pangas, housebreaking implements, and two suspected stolen mobile phones from the suspects’ bags during the arrest.
A motorcycle registration number UGD 081D, which the suspects were riding at the time, was also recovered. Police noted that its number plate had been deliberately concealed.
Kawala said security forces are now pursuing other members of the gang as investigations continue.
“Our forces are intensifying efforts to apprehend other suspects involved in these violent robberies as we continue the crackdown on panga-wielding thugs in the region,” she said.
