President Museveni has said Uganda is performing well in all spheres, dismissing critics and saying “haters can go hang.”
“Despite some weaknesses here and there, Uganda is the fifth fastest-growing country in the world. Anyone who wants to hang because of this fact should do so. It is not only in Africa but in the entire world that we are the fifth fastest-growing economy,” Museveni said.
The President made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing his final campaign rally at Kololo Independence Grounds. He said that although official figures place Uganda as the fifth fastest-growing economy globally, in his view the country could actually be number one.
“It looks like Uganda may be number one in the whole world because the countries said to be growing faster include Guyana, which has just discovered oil and started exploiting it; South Sudan, which despite having war also has oil; Guinea in West Africa, which has minerals that have started being exploited; and Sudan, where parts without war also have oil,” Museveni said.
He added: “Uganda is number five, growing at 7.6 percent, before we exploit our oil. When we start exploiting our oil, we will be number one.”
Museveni urged Ugandans to reject what he described as propaganda from political opponents.
“You should reject the campaign of the enemies who want to divert us and confuse the world,” he said.
He also said those claiming that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has done nothing for the country are enemies of development.
“Uganda is now 17 times richer than it was in 1986. In 1986, the size of the economy was 3.9 billion dollars, and by June this year, the economy will be 68.4 billion dollars if you use the exchange rate method,” Museveni said.
“When you hear some people say NRM has done nothing, they are our enemies. Those without eyes to see these factories are enemies who want to divert us,” he added.
