The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU XI) joined the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the United Nations today to mark World Environment Day.
This year’s theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” was echoed by the event’s slogan, “Restore the Land, Revive the Earth,” and sub-theme, “Heal the Soil, Review the Future.”
The main commemoration took place at Aden Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu, drawing participation from the FGS, AUSSOM, the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), and the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS). Activities included environmental exhibitions supporting peace operations and tree planting within the UNSOS compound.
Ms Qurat-Al-Ain Sadozai, Director of Mission Support and Acting Head of UNSOS, praised the collaborative spirit of the occasion and stressed the urgency of addressing plastic waste. “Eleven million tons of plastic waste enter ecosystems every year, causing an economic loss of between $300 and $600 billion,” she warned.
Ms Sadozai commended Somalia’s measures to reduce plastic waste, particularly its policy of burning plastic, and highlighted efforts towards zero waste and the development of a circular economy. She also showcased current UN initiatives including the promotion of reusable materials, reforestation campaigns, and coastal clean-up projects.
Mr Adebayo Kareem, Acting Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for AUSSOM, called for a collective approach to environmental protection.
Citing Somalia’s growing vulnerability to climate change, he noted the country’s shifting rainfall patterns and extended droughts as signs of an escalating crisis. He advocated for bold policy action and behavioural change to combat both deforestation and plastic pollution.
Somalia’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Lt Gen Bashir Mohamed Jama, described World Environment Day as a moment for reflection and rededication to sustainability.
He underscored the impact of plastic waste on local livelihoods and outlined government strategies focused on waste management, eco-friendly alternatives, and public education.
The minister reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to partnering with global stakeholders for a greener future.
AUSSOM Force Commander, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, highlighted the nexus between environmental degradation and instability. “Damage to the environment threatens long-term peace and stability,” he said, urging swift action to confront plastic pollution and safeguard natural resources.
The day’s celebrations also saw UNGU XI, led by Commanding Officer Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, plant trees within their compound. Lt Col Barigye remarked, “On this World Environment Day, we are taking a step toward a more sustainable Somalia. By planting these trees, we are investing in the future of our communities and our environment. Let’s continue to nurture and protect Somalia’s natural beauty for generations to come.”
Senior officials from UNSOS, representatives of the Federal Government, UNGU XI personnel, and delegates from AUSSOM and partner organisations were also in attendance.
