Police at Kampala Central Police Station have opened investigations into the death of an 11-year-old girl who was found unresponsive inside a taxi at Old Taxi Park in Kampala.

The incident was reported on December 23, 2025, at about 9:00am at the Tororo Stage of Old Taxi Park. According to preliminary police findings, the child had been traveling alone from Tororo to Walusubi in Mukono District before the journey took a tragic turn.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, SP Rachael Kawala, said the child was handed to a taxi driver on December 22, 2025, at around 4:30pm.

“The guide informed the driver that the child was traveling to Walusubi in Mukono District and provided him with two telephone contacts of the person who was supposed to receive her upon arrival,” SP Kawala said.

Police identified the vehicle as a Toyota Hiace, registration number UBM 696P, driven by Kalulu Bosco. The child was reportedly brought to the driver by a guide only known as Asuman while the taxi was loading passengers in Tororo.

Upon reaching Walusubi at about 12:30am, the driver attempted to contact the persons listed to receive the child but was unsuccessful.

“One phone was switched off, while the other was answered by a person who stated that it was a wrong number,” SP Kawala explained.

With no one available to receive the child, the driver decided to proceed to Kampala, intending to return her to Tororo should the contacts remain unreachable. The girl spent the night inside the vehicle.

The situation became apparent the following morning as the taxi was being loaded to return to Tororo.

“One of the passengers noticed that the child was motionless,” SP Kawala said.

Police were immediately notified, and a case of sudden death was registered. The body was later conveyed to KCCA City Mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Police noted that the deceased was not in the company of any known relative at the time of travel. A search of her belongings recovered a piece of paper containing two telephone numbers and a yellow T-shirt bearing the badge of St. Anthony Parents Mukono, with the name “Kiiza” written on it.

“Efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased and trace her relatives,” SP Kawala said.

She also cautioned parents and guardians against allowing children to travel unaccompanied.

“We would like to advise parents and guardians to ensure that children travel in the company of a responsible adult or are appropriately supervised at all times for their safety,” SP Kawala said.

Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
