The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) now uses a Competency-Based Curriculum, and student performance is reported using letter grades from A to E.
Each grade shows how well a student can apply knowledge and skills in real-life situations:
A (Exceptional): Extraordinary skills applied creatively.
B (Outstanding): High level of competency in practical situations.
C (Satisfactory): Adequate competency.
D (Basic): Minimum competency.
E (Elementary): Below basic competency.
Grades are calculated using a combination of 20% Continuous Assessment done in school and 80% End-of-Cycle Exam scores.
The scores are processed using statistical and psychometric methods to ensure fairness and accuracy.
Certification:
A student requires at least a Grade D to receive the UCE certificate.
Result Indicators:
Result 1: Qualified for the certificate.
Result 2: Did not complete compulsory subjects or projects.
Result 3: Scored E in all subjects.
This system focuses not just on passing exams, but on how well learners can use what they know in real life, making it easier to identify students’ strengths and areas for improvement.
