The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has paid glowing tribute to the late Major General Francis Takiriwa during a solemn funeral service held at All Saints’ Cathedral, Nakasero, in Kampala.
Maj Gen Takiriwa passed away on February 7, 2026, at the UPDF National Referral Hospital.
Speaking at the service, the Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs (Veteran Affairs), Huda Oleru Abason, described the deceased as a dedicated officer whose warm personality distinguished him throughout his military career.
“General Takiriwa was always jolly and loving. Today, we pay our last respects to a man who served his country faithfully. His work on earth is done, and he has gone to the Lord. Though he is physically gone, his memory will remain with us,” she said.
In a message delivered on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen James Mugira, the Managing Director of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) said Maj Gen Takiriwa exemplified the UPDF’s core values of patriotism, professionalism, discipline, integrity and loyalty.
“He was a professional soldier whose career reflected dedication to duty and commitment to excellence. In every responsibility entrusted to him, he led by example, upheld standards and instilled confidence through his conduct and commitment,” the message read.
The Chief of Defence Forces also recalled Maj Gen Takiriwa’s leadership during operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1999, noting that he commanded troops decisively and dealt a significant blow to enemy forces.
Over the course of his career, Maj Gen Takiriwa held several key command and administrative positions, including Chief of Education, Sports and Culture in the UPDF, Commander of the 2nd Division, and Deputy Commander of the Land Force. He also served as one of the UPDF representatives in the 10th Parliament.
On behalf of the family, his sister Florence Sanyu described him as a compassionate and hardworking man who was deeply devoted to both his family and the nation.
“He devoted his life to serving the country. He was compassionate and supported many children who greatly loved him,” she said.
The funeral service was presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, and was attended by ministers, Members of Parliament, senior generals, service commanders, UPDF officers, clergy, family and friends.
