A UPDF soldier died on the spot and eight other people were injured in an accident involving the escort vehicle of the State Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Huda Oleru Obason in Luweero
The Savannah Police regional spokesperson, Sam Twineamazima said the accident happened at around 7:45pm at Kalule Village, Nyimbwa Sub-County, involving a white Fuso Fighter truck , registration number UAN 394Z traveling from Kampala and the minister’s convoy which was travelling from Gulu side.
“The Fuso attempted a reckless overtaking maneuver near Kalule and during this overtaking, the truck collided head-on with an oncoming green Toyota Hilux , registration number UG 0388D), which was part of an official convoy of Hon Huda Oleru, state minister for Defense and veterans affairs traveling from Luwero towards Kampala,” Twineamazima said.
He noted that the collision resulted in the immediate death of Lance Corporal Moses Edongoto who was part of the convoy, while six other soldiers and two civilians sustained injuries and had to be rushed to the Bombo General Military Hospital for urgent treatment.
Police said the vehicles involved were subsequently towed to Bombo Police Station for further investigations.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the cause of the crash was reckless overtaking by the driver of the Fuso truck. Investigations are ongoing,” Twineamazima said.
Earlier, reports had indicated that Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Nobert Mao was the one involved in the accident but he later clarified that he was among those who responded to the accident.
“With the help of other travelers and locals, we rescued the escorts and managed to send the injured to Bombo Military Hospital,” he said.
