Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has reminded taxpayers that they can avoid paying interest and penalties on outstanding tax debts if they clear their principal tax by June 30, 2026.
In a public notice, URA said the waiver applies to all taxes that were due on or before June 30, 2024, in accordance with the Tax Procedures Code Act.
“The Tax Procedures Code Act provides for waiver of interest and penalty outstanding as at 30th June 2024, where a taxpayer pays the outstanding principal tax by 30th June 2026,” URA management stated.
The authority emphasized that even taxpayers who are unable to settle their entire tax debt at once can still benefit from the arrangement.
“A taxpayer who pays only a portion of the principal tax outstanding as at 30th June 2024 by 30th June 2026 shall benefit from a waiver of the portion of interest and penalty that relates to the principal tax paid,” URA said.
URA urged individuals and businesses with unpaid taxes to take advantage of the opportunity before the deadline.
“URA urges all taxpayers with outstanding principal tax for the period up to 30th June 2024 to pay the principal tax by 30th June 2026 to benefit from the waiver,” management said, warning that failure to do so will make the accrued interest and penalties payable.
Taxpayers can check their outstanding balances by logging into their Tax Identification Number (TIN) accounts on the URA portal or by visiting the nearest URA office. The authority will also notify eligible taxpayers of their outstanding balances via SMS and email.
However, URA clarified that the waiver does not apply to customs taxes and duties. It only covers interest and penalties linked to domestic taxes that were due by June 30, 2024.
With less than five months remaining before the waiver period expires, URA has encouraged taxpayers to act promptly.
“The waiver of interest and penalty will lapse in less than five months from now,” URA management noted.
Taxpayers seeking further assistance are advised to contact URA through its offices, official email channels, or toll-free helplines.
