Police have arrested 10 suspected criminals during a night operation in Buwate–Najjera, Kira Municipality, as part of efforts to curb crime ahead of and after the election period.
The operation was carried out by officers from Kira Police Division working together with other security agencies.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala said the suspects were found using illegal drugs inside a wooden structure.
“During the operation, ten suspects were arrested red-handed while smoking suspected narcotic substances inside a wooden structure. Exhibits including rolled sticks and powdered leaves believed to be narcotics were recovered from the scene,” Kawala said.
She explained that police believe the group was using drugs to support criminal activity in the area.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects reportedly consume narcotic substances before engaging in criminal activities such as waylaying pedestrians and stoning moving vehicles,” she added.
According to police, the suspects are now in custody as investigations continue.
“The suspects are currently in police custody pending court proceedings. A case of possession of narcotic substances, to wit opium, has been registered against them,” Kawala said.
Police also assured the public that security operations will continue to keep residents safe.
“Police operations will continue during and after the election period to ensure public safety and security,” she noted.
