A total of 190 Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) serving under the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Contingent in the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) have been promoted in recognition of their service and leadership.
The promotion ceremony was held at the UNGU-XI Contingent Headquarters in Mogadishu and was presided over by Contingent Commander Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye.
He lauded the officers for their dedication and commitment to duty while urging them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
“Your promotion is a testament to your hard work and leadership,” Lt Col Barigye said. “I urge you to continue serving as role models and mentors to your fellow soldiers.”
He emphasized that as the officers take on new responsibilities, they must exemplify the values of both the UPDF and the United Nations—integrity, discipline, and respect for diversity.
The United Nations Principal Security Adviser, Mr. Joseph Katuramu, echoed these sentiments, stressing that promotion comes with heightened expectations.
“Leadership demands accountability, maturity, and continuous improvement,” he said. “Avoid complacency, because others are watching and rising.”
Lt Col Vincent Mutebi Masembe, speaking on behalf of the AUSSOM Sector One Commander, also congratulated the officers and reminded them that promotion marks the beginning of a new chapter.
“Stay disciplined and focused because there are more ranks ahead,” he advised.
Among those promoted was the senior-most NCO, Warrant Officer Class I Labu Alex, who moved up from WOII. He expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership and pledged to support both his peers and superiors.
“I will use my new rank to support my juniors and superiors in every way possible,” WO1 Labu said.
