Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, on Wednesday formally welcomed seven Members of Parliament into the National Unity Platform (NUP), further cementing the party’s growing national presence and influence.
The high-profile announcement was made during a press conference held at the NUP headquarters in Kavule, Kampala.
The defecting MPs were introduced as the newest members of what Bobi Wine termed a “revolutionary struggle,” joining the ranks of Uganda’s largest opposition party.
“We have been very honored to welcome into the National Unity Platform, this afternoon, Members of Parliament who have officially joined the Party. You’re very welcome to home, our Honourable comrades,” Kyagulanyi said.
The MPs who officially joined the NUP include:
Luttamaguzi Ssemakula Paulson Kasana (Nakaseke South County) from DP.
Joan Namutaawe (Woman MP, Masaka District)
Patrick Nsanja Kayongo (Ntenjeru South)
Fortunate Nantongo (Woman MP, Kyotera District)
John Paul Lukwago Mpalanyi (Kyotera County)
Timothy Batuwa Lusala (Jinja Municipality West)
David Isabirye Aga (Jinja North Division)
In a significant boost to the party’s visibility, veteran journalist and former NBS Amasengejje news anchor Zambaali Bulasio also announced his transition from media to politics. He will be contesting for the Nansana Municipality seat under the NUP banner.
The defections come at a time when NUP already commands 57 seats in Uganda’s 11th Parliament, strengthening its status as the leading opposition force.
Bobi Wine attributed the rising wave of support to a growing national demand for transformation and increasing discontent with the ruling regime.
“Despite the regime stepping up the persecution of supporters of the NUP, we continue to attract new members into the Party,” he noted. Adding that, “This afternoon, we formally welcomed over 470 of them.”
The development marks a pivotal moment for the party as it consolidates its grassroots strength and parliamentary presence ahead of the 2026 general elections.
