Uganda’s Apostolic Nuncio, Rt Rev Luigi Bianco has said his emotional goodbyes to officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as he concluded his diplomatic tour of duty in Uganda.
On Thursday, Bianco paid a farewell courtesy call to the Minister of state for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Affairs, Henry Oryem Henry Okello at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters.
During the event, Bianco conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to President Museveni and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the immense support, hospitality, and kindness extended to him during his tour.
He expressed his deep gratitude for the special condolence message sent by the president on the passing of the late Pope Francis, and for delegating the Vice President, Jessica Alupo, to represent Uganda and sign the condolence book at the Apostolic Nunciature.
The Nuncio warmly reflected on his time in Uganda, noting that he would be departing the country by Sunday in preparation for his next diplomatic assignment in Lovania, where he is expected to assume duty by June, 20, 2025.
“I have been deeply touched by the generosity, warmth, and faith of the Ugandan people,” he said.
“This country has a special spirit — and I will truly miss Uganda.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs warmly thanked the Nuncio for his dedicated service and friendship, noting that his presence in Uganda has greatly enriched the spiritual and diplomatic relationship between the Republic of Uganda and the Vatican.
The minister also shared that bidding farewell to members of the diplomatic corps is never easy,
as he often forms genuine bonds and friendships with them over time.
He praised Bianco for his humility, openness, and contribution to Uganda’s international engagement.
In a light-hearted gesture, and sharing a warm moment of laughter, the minister promised to visit the Nuncio in Lovania, saying, “I’ll bring Ugandan coffee, matooke, and all the tropical goodness we’re known for.”
Bianco also informed the minister that Rev. Fr. Georges Kwami Kouwonou will oversee the affairs of the Apostolic Nunciature in Uganda in his absence, until a new Papal Nuncio is appointed.
