The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has submitted over two million signatures to the Electoral Commission (EC) to back the nomination of President Yoweri Museveni as its presidential flag bearer for the 2026 general elections.
Led by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, party officials presented the signatures on Friday afternoon. The submission precedes the official nomination of presidential aspirants, scheduled for September 23 and 24.
Speaking to the media, Todwong said the signatures were collected from all districts across Uganda.
Under Uganda’s electoral laws, a presidential aspirant is required to submit at least 100 signatures from a minimum of 98 districts to qualify for nomination.
NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, described the exercise as a show of strong support for the incumbent president.
“These are not just signatures — they represent votes. We are taking these to the Electoral Commission and will add more in 2026,” he said.
President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is expected to seek re-election in 2026 under the NRM ticket.
The Electoral Commission is expected to vet all submitted signatures to confirm eligibility and compliance with nomination requirements.
