Mercy Kanyesigye, aspiring National Female Youth Member of Parliament, has opened up about her decision to run as an independent candidate, citing irregularities in the NRM primaries.
Speaking on Sanyuka TV on Friday, Kanyesigye, who was the second runner-up in the party primaries, described the process as lacking fairness and transparency.
“I was the second runner-up in the NRM primaries, but honestly, there was no democracy the process wasn’t fair,” Kanyesigye said.
She added that her support from young people, built through resilience and strong community engagement, remains a source of gratitude and motivation.
On her agenda, Kanyesigye emphasized youth empowerment and anti-corruption initiatives.
She highlighted the need for programs that directly benefit young people, particularly in ensuring fair access to resources under government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“When PDM was introduced, many young people had not yet received their share. Eventually, they were given 30%, but that allocation isn’t sufficient considering the number of youths,” she noted.
“I plan to advocate for increased resources to ensure that young people fully benefit,” she revealed
Kanyesigye also committed to collaborating with youth leaders to create opportunities, tackle corruption, and strengthen programs that uplift young Ugandans across the country.
Kanyesigye emphasized the importance of empowering Ugandan youth leaders to understand and exercise their right to choose leaders of their own making.
Reflecting on her own leadership experience, she urged young voters to back candidates with proven records of service.
“Youths should support leaders who have a demonstrated track record and a deep understanding of youth issues. They must reject inexperienced puppets imposed by a small group of self-serving individuals within the party,” she stated.
