Police in Sironko District have dismissed allegations that a supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate was shot during campaign activities in the Elgon region, describing the claims as false and misleading.
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, January 4, 2026, in Buchibindi village, Budadiri Town Council, and involved a motor vehicle registration number UBM 430K, a Toyota Wish, driven by Hamza Lubulwa.
Elgon Region Police Spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika said the vehicle was driving recklessly along the NUP presidential candidate’s campaign route.
“The driver overtook the candidate’s convoy in a dangerous manner, refused to stop when flagged down by the security detail, and nearly knocked a security vehicle,” SP Taitika said.
He explained that the actions of the driver prompted a pursuit and subsequent interception by security personnel.
“Upon being stopped, the driver resisted lawful arrest. During the ensuing scuffle, he sustained a head injury and was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention,” SP Taitika stated.
Police emphasized that claims circulating on social media alleging that Lubulwa Hamza was shot are not supported by any evidence.
“Allegations that the individual was shot are false and not supported by clinical findings,” SP Taitika said, adding that medical reports confirm the injury resulted from the scuffle during arrest.
Police urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, especially during the ongoing political campaigns, and called on motorists to observe traffic regulations and cooperate with security personnel to ensure public safety.
