A Grade One Magistrate in Hoima, George Kunihira, has remanded Solomon Sabiti, the owner of a taxi involved in a fatal road accident that claimed the life of Kikuube District Chairperson Peter Banura.
Sabiti was sent to prison after failing to produce the driver who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. The driver remains on the run.
Court heard that Sabiti is charged with failure to keep proper records of his driver, a requirement under the law.
He appeared before court on Friday, where he denied the charge and appealed for leniency, citing his health condition and willingness to cooperate with authorities.
“I went to Kikuube Police twice, and yesterday I went to Hoima CPS to work with police to track the driver. I am sick, and as a former civil servant, I understand and respect the court process, so I cannot run away if granted bail,” he said.
Despite his plea, the magistrate ordered his remand, noting the absence of the state prosecutor and the need to follow due process. The court also assured him that he would receive appropriate care while in custody.
Sabiti will remain on remand until April 14, 2026, when he is expected to return to court for the hearing of his bail application.
The deceased, Banura, was knocked down by a speeding taxi, registration number UBQ 853E, in Butyamba Village within the Butyamba IDP area last Saturday. The driver reportedly fled the scene and later abandoned the vehicle before disappearing.
Banura, who was also the son of Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, was laid to rest on Thursday at his ancestral home in Rumiina Kakooge Cell, Buhimba Town Council.
