Veteran opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye has endorsed National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, backing his campaign with a financial contribution despite being in prison for more than a year.
Besigye’s support was delivered through his wife, Winnie Byanyima, who hosted Bobi Wine at their Kasangati home on Sunday during a special mass held to pray for Besigye and other political prisoners.
The mass, presided over by Rev. Fr. Kabogoza, drew families of political prisoners and several opposition politicians, turning the event into both a prayer gathering and a show of political solidarity.
Addressing the congregation, Byanyima thanked attendees for standing with families of detainees and conveyed Besigye’s message of support to Bobi Wine.
“The most important thing is the message from Dr Kizza Besigye when we went to see him on Friday,” Byanyima said.
“He sent a message to you, Mr Kyagulanyi. While he is in prison, he is not earning anything, but he has friends. Among those friends, he fundraised and said we should get this money and give it to you to support the last push of the campaign.”
The money, handed to Bobi Wine in a white envelope, was not disclosed.
Receiving the contribution, Bobi Wine described Besigye’s gesture as a powerful act of courage and unity.
“We are very grateful to Dr Kizza Besigye for sending us a message of encouragement and hope,” Bobi Wine said.
“Despite being in prison, he has sent us a generous financial contribution towards the last lap of our campaigns.”
He also praised families of political prisoners for their resilience and continued pressure on authorities to secure the release of their loved ones.
“In unity, we shall overcome every obstacle on our path to freedom,” Bobi Wine added.
