After a tense election that kept many Ugandans, especially Kampala residents, in suspense, the counting of votes has begun to show early signs of where the race might be headed, with the “white smoke” expected to emerge by the early hours of today.
Provisional results from the Electoral Commission tally centre at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) indicate that National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo is currently in the lead.
The count has so far covered over 76,000 votes, with a small fraction about 1,000 classified as invalid.
So far, results from 847 out of 2,705 polling stations have been received and counted, representing about 31 percent of all polling stations in the city.
From these, Balimwezo has polled 47,400 votes While the incumbent Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) is trailing with 13,456 votes, while NRM’s Kizito Moses Nsubuga follows with 11,730 votes.
Other candidates trail with Beatrice Mao on 784 votes, Nabillah Naggayi Sempala on 923, FDC’s Ibrahim Kasozi Biribawa on 680, Jothan Yamureebire on 60, and Eddie Bazira Kibalama on 51.
The Electoral Commission has cautioned that these figures are still provisional and subject to change as more declaration forms arrive from across Kampala.
The final results will only be announced once tallying is complete.
