Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua has conceded defeat in the Ajuri County parliamentary race following a partial re-run ordered by court.

Obua, who is also the outgoing Member of Parliament for Ajuri County in Alebtong District, accepted the outcome of the re-run held at 18 polling stations on Tuesday.

According to the final results, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) candidate Fred Jalameso secured 16,336 votes, defeating Obua, who garnered 15,568 votes, thereby ending Obua’s decade-long tenure in Parliament.

The partial re-run followed a successful election petition filed by Jalameso, who challenged the initial results over discrepancies at 18 polling stations. Court subsequently ordered a re-run in those areas, which confirmed Jalameso’s victory.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Obua said he had accepted the declared results and thanked the people of Ajuri County for the opportunity to serve them over the years.

“I have served the people of Ajuri County and made my contribution to the best of my abilities. I wish to congratulate and wish the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ajuri County good luck in service,” Obua said.

He added that, although he will be out of elective politics for the next five years, he remains committed to serving his people, Northern Uganda, the Lango sub-region and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Obua currently serves as the NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda.
