The Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has endorsed Thomas Tayebwa to retain his position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
In a post shared on X on Tuesday, Gen Muhoozi said the decision had been agreed upon by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who also serves as the national chairman of the National Resistance Movement.
“On the issue of Deputy Speaker, after getting guidance from the Commander-in-Chief, all PLU MPs and PLU-leaning MPs will support Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for that position,” Gen Muhoozi said.
The development comes as a relief for Tayebwa, who had been expected to lose the position following a shake-up in Parliament’s leadership. The changes began with Speaker Anita Annet Among withdrawing from the Speakership race amid allegations of corruption and illicit wealth acquisition.
Earlier, Gen Muhoozi had hinted at the possibility of appointing a female Deputy Speaker to balance gender representation. This sparked speculation that Lilian Aber could take up the role due to her affiliation with both the NRM and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
The developments come on the backdrop of continued investigations against Among by security who have raided several of her homes in Kampala and Bukedea where a sizeable number of exhibits have been got.
